Wang
to Windows Migration Success
Arkansas
Foundation for Medical Care (AFMC) ran
its business applications on a Wang
VS1600. Using VS COBOL 74, the in-house
staff created highly customized
applications to support specific AFMC
contracts. Over time, AFMC realized that
their growth and financial soundness
were being limited by:
•
the proprietary limitations of the
Wang VS environment,
•
the impact of reduced support,
•
and the lack of people who knew (or
wanted to learn) the Wang VS
environment.
AFMC
could not afford the cost and time to
re-write the applications nor could they
find a commercial off-the-shelf (COTS)
package that would work without
extensive cost and modification.
Using
fully automated converters, the AFMC environment
was quickly migrated to a Windows Server
2003 running on a Dell Xeon server.

Wang
to Unix Migration Success
Detroit
Diesel was determined to:
•
modernize operations while preserving
their trusted COBOL applications,
•
leverage the knowledge of a seasoned
programming staff.
Detroit
Diesel's applications contained
1,300,000 lines of VS COBOL and resided
on a Wang VS10000. The system was
serving 120 concurrent users in the home
and satellite offices connected to VS5’s
and VS5000’s.
A
100% successful turnkey migration to a
true native Open Systems environment
gave Detroit Diesel the reliable
environment they needed for their
business critical applications and
reduce some jobs that took six hours to
only 20 minutes.

DEC
VAX to Windows Migration Success
Cincinnati
Public Schools (CPS) used a custom COBOL
program running on a DEC VAX/VMS
minicomputer using an ISAM database and
character-based screens to track student
transportation services.
A
successful migration moved their trusted
program to open systems COBOL and an
upgraded network. Then, for extra
credit, they transformed one hundred and
fifty character-based screens to a
GUI interface… all in less than
four months!

IBM
CICS to Windows Migration Success
The
Javits Center in New York was running
its custom financial, booking,
invoicing, human resources, order entry,
purchasing, and advertising applications
on an IBM mainframe, in a COBOL
environment with CICS emulation
support.
A
successful migration to open systems
improved application and reporting speed—reducing
report time from hours to minutes. This
allowed users to run their own reports,
and eliminated the need for overnight
technical shifts for reporting and
backup.
